Report

In my presentation, I gave an overview of the transformation of mountain tourism destinations of Japan, particularly focusing on the case study of Kamikochi.

In this paper I discussed the complex nature of natural heritage of the concerned area, i.e. how the Japanese Alps is a geologically recent, uplift-dominated landform that is shaped by intensive denudation and volcanism related processes, and how these processes are related to the ecosystem/landscape mechanisms.

The paper also discussed the transformation of this landscape due to a variety of socioeconomic factors and how tourism here underwent several transition phases. Challenges for sustainable tourism management such as landscape fragmentation, global environmental change and lack of tourist awareness; and prospects such as rising environmental consciousness among tourists and stakeholders were analyzed.
